“I think painting is more like the real world if it’s made out in the real world.” —Robert Rauschenberg
It’s a short and sweet one from me today, as for the second time in a week I’ve had to drive the three-plus hours to O’Hare to ferry family between connections to/from Lima, which prove to be more circuitous from the far reaches of northern Wisconsin! Oh, this globalized world we live in… makes for some good thinking-while-driving, though. Sometimes I appreciate not being able to do much else.
On Friday, I’m looking forward to heading up to Door County, Wisconsin’s Lake Michigan peninsula that has a legacy of artist colonies on top of its maritime heritage and natural landscapes. To my knowledge, though, it’s never had an art fair—at least not in the sense of a commercial gallery fair.
In the spirit of a lot of the small, boutique art fairs that have been popping up in Upstate New York, for example, a small gathering of contemporary art galleries from Chicago, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, and a couple of other spots have been coordinated by a group of artists/gallerists to test the waters for the first time with Door County Contemporary. Consider me on assignment!
See you next week.

Twelve opportunities for artists with deadlines coming up soon
Featured Artist: Holly Wong
Through oil paint, graphite, charcoal, and alcohol ink on canvas and paper, Holly Wong’s patterned collages that reflect upon “how one’s spiritual life can transform trauma and support growing resilience,” she says.
“In my recent collaged painting series, I sublimate the scars of trauma from a family history of violence so that wounds can be alchemized into a form of radical repair,” Wong explains. “I use the art-making process and my individual practice of mysticism to identify my pain and then transform it with densely layered imagery that acts as a salve.”
The artist currently has a solo exhibition titled Sacred Letters on view at ELLIO Fine Art in Houston through June 21. Find more on Wong’s website and Instagram.
