Hi, friends—
Happy Wednesday! Thanks for checking out this week’s roundup of exhibitions and opportunities for artists.
I’m playing a bit of catchup after a big trip to Peru to visit family for the holiday—absolutely incredible, even through bouts of altitude sickness en route to Machu Picchu. Unfortunately, the one full day I was in Lima was a Monday, so naturally, some of the big museums were closed—somehow that always happens to me!?—but I’m a firm believer that a short trip should be treated like a taster for next time; there’s always plenty left to add to another itinerary.
Next week, I’m headed to Miami to check out the fairs for the first time since 2018. During the past several years, there’s been a glut of them—both new and returning— and for a while, I felt so jaded about the commercial chug-chug-chug that I was like, puh, I won’t even bother. This year, being in the haven’t-been-in-a-while camp feels great. It puts some novelty back into the experience! My only assignment is one to myself: remember to be surprised. The market is never my focus, but good art is. I look forward to saying hi to people, seeing new galleries, revisiting work by artists whose practices I’ve followed for a few years, and—my favorite thing—learning about new artists.
So, on that note, I’ll be sending a special Miami edition for paid subscribers next week, rounding up some choice things to see! Also, paid subscribers will probably be getting another bonus list of opportunities soon because I’ve been compiling a lot!
If you don’t already, you can get twice as many newsletters by supporting my work as a paid subscriber by subscribing below. Your support means so much, thank you! —Kate
What you’ll find below:
Joshua Rainer is an artist to watch
Featured Artist: Saskia Fleishman
Five exhibitions on view this week in Dallas, Chicago, New York, Findhorn (Scotland), London, and Los Angeles
Nine opportunities for artists with deadlines coming up soon
Featured Artist: Saskia Fleishman
In the coming weeks, I’ll share work by a few artists I’m currently working with toward an exhibition in the spring—I’ll be sure to share more information eventually!
Saskia Fleishman is an artist whose work I’ve been following for several years, whose work has always drawn me in to its glowing palette, interplay of textures, and focus on landscape. She was also a participant of the Young Space residency at PADA Studios in Barreiro, Portugal, in 2019, which was a great opportunity to see some of her work evolve over the course of a month.
Currently based in Philadephia, Fleishman renders acrylic mixed with sand onto sheer, digitally-printed chiffon. The imagery is drawn from photographs she’s taken while on road trips and during residencies, or sourced from friends or online. Continually interested in the dynamic between the organic and the geometric, over time, the shapes that intersect each composition have become increasingly portal-like, toying with light and depth.
Fleishman’s work is currently part of The Process of Seeing at Galleri Urbane in Dallas through December 30, including some new ceramic pieces. See more on the artist’s Instagram.
Artist to Watch: Joshua Rainer
The piece above, so brand new it hasn’t even been stretched yet in Joshua Rainer’s Cranbrook Academy of Art studio, “is based on a dream I had years ago, in high school, wherein I discovered I could levitate in basement of my childhood home,” the artist told me. “Shortly after making this discovery, I enthusiastically showed my mother and grandmother, who seemed unusually unsurprised.”
The complementary palette of oranges and blues, which make the composition both glow and feel drained, nods to the oblique depths of memory or, of course, dreams. The hovering figure is mysterious in that he faces away, so we’re unable to glimpse a facial expression and gauge his reaction. For that reason, I love the tense hand, an indication that this moment is far from static.
Rainer continues, “This work, like the next few I plan to make, are based on dreams I’ve journaled since high school. I enjoy deciphering dreams the way I enjoy dissecting art. The practice of analyzing both things, uncertainty or debate about the ‘practical’ utility of both things, and the unique visual languages used across cultures to convey certain ideas in both things really interest me.”
Rainer has work included in Skilled Labor: Black Realism in Detroit at Cranbrook Art Museum through March 4, and he will open a solo exhibition with M Contemporary in January. Follow his work on Instagram.
