This week’s edition is a bit brief, marking the beginning of the slowest art world month of the year. I’ve decided to skip the exhibition recommendations for now, as there are loads of big all-in group shows, and I’m looking forward to a seasonal return of more curated presentations. That said, lots of things are currently running on extended timelines because galleries often close—or chill out a bit—for at least a portion of August. I’ll get back to that soon.
There are quite also a few deadlines coming up closer to the end of the month and into September, so there’s plenty to prep for now if you’re on the lookout. Not to worry, though, I’ve popped in a few below, too. And paid subscribers, remember you can check out yngspc.com/opportunities anytime to see everything all at once.
Stay cool, and see you next week!

Nine opportunities for artists with deadlines coming up soon
Featured Artist: Mariano Barone
Just what is it about a grid? I’m really drawn to Mariano Barone’s playful, graphic abstract paintings that draw on a 1980s or 1990s aesthetic. I love that they are flat yet hint at layers or portals, or comic book-like action bubbles. The net-like backgrounds or delicate zig-zags tenderly hold colorful baubles and linear bursts. And his surfaces often mimic ruled paper, evoking a nostalgia I associate with childhood and school.

Lakou NOU Artist Residency 2024 for NYC Area Artists of Haitian Descent
Deadline: August 9
In rural Haiti, the Lakou communal living system embodies the intersection of land, family, and spirituality. Former enslaved people created the Lakou in resistance to the racial and class divides perpetuated by colonial plantations. By organizing around shared land, the Lakou promotes economic equity and avoids exploitation. Lakou NOU (“Our Yard” in Haitian Creole) is a creative adaptation of this traditional model. Artists are not required to live in the targeted "Lakou" neighborhoods (Crown Heights, Flatbush, East Flatbush, or Canarsie), but must live in the greater New York City area for the duration of the residency period. Artists receive a $7,500 stipend and professional development, mentorship, and networking activities.
