I’ve been trying to get into some semblance of a routine for the past couple of weeks since returning from my trip, but of course, being summer, this is not really what’s happening. I volley from hyper-productivity—I submitted three articles last week and adopted a dog!—to This Old House Channel marathons. Nothing says that my brain needs a break like zoning out contentedly to Tom Silva and crew talking for hours about 15-lb. felt, window sashes, and reclaimed timber beams. (Anyone else?)
One thing I don’t really talk about very much but that I spend a lot of time doing is writing and editing for Colossal. For the past two-and-a-half years, I’ve contributed a few hundred articles about everything from ancient Roman mosaics to intricate craft to monumental contemporary art installations. I thought I’d share just a handful of the cool artists I’ve been pleased to write about lately:
Nastassja Swift’s textile sculptures and tapestries
Suchitra Mattai at Socrates Sculpture Park
Xenobia Bailey and the aesthetic of funk
Nicholas V. Sanchez’s dreamlike equine drawings
Jorge Mañes Rubio’s painstakingly beaded basketballs
I’ll leave it at that this week—I’m headed “up nort’,” as they say here in the Upper Midwest, to spend a few days relaxing and hanging out with my sisters, one of whom is visiting from Australia. It’s been a while!
See you next week!

Four exhibitions in New York and Montreal
Twelve opportunities for artists with deadlines coming up soon
Featured Artist: Elly Minagawa
As much as we complain about Instagram and algorithms these days, it sure does still cough up some good things from time to time. Case in point, during a recent scroll, I landed on the work on Elly Minagawa, whose trippy paintings reminisce about early technology, teenage relationships, and girlhood dreams. I love the airbrush technique, a throwback to the 90s—it always makes me think of souvenir T-shirts from places like Key West or Venice Beach—and the enigmatic, blurred juxtapositions that mimic analog television effects merged with the blurriness of memory.

As an artist-run space, OyG is a model I’ve long admired, and I love a large-scale, maximalist approach to painting! Lakou NOU Artist Residency 2024 for NYC Area Artists of Haitian Descent
Deadline: August 9
In rural Haiti, the Lakou communal living system embodies the intersection of land, family, and spirituality. Former enslaved people created the Lakou in resistance to the racial and class divides perpetuated by colonial plantations. By organizing around shared land, the Lakou promotes economic equity and avoids exploitation. Lakou NOU (“Our Yard” in Haitian Creole) is a creative adaptation of this traditional model. Artists are not required to live in the targeted "Lakou" neighborhoods (Crown Heights, Flatbush, East Flatbush, or Canarsie), but must live in the greater New York City area for the duration of the residency period. Artists receive a $7,500 stipend and professional development, mentorship, and networking activities.
