Hello, friends—
A somewhat brief intro from me this week, as it’s been a whirlwind week, first in New York to celebrate the opening of Eutierria at CARVALHO PARK—what a wonderful time with so many lovely artists—then back to Wisconsin, and now on the road to Denver to install Desire Lines at David B. Smith Gallery, which opens on Saturday. The opening reception is on Saturday, June 1, with artists in attendance! If you’re in the area, we’d love to see you.
My two favorite parts of a road trip are the first day—what jubilation!—and about two weeks in, when the flow begins. I’m very much at the beginning of a trip now, starting with a couple of weeks in Colorado followed by a 5-week trek through the Southwest, up Highway 101 on the West Coast, and back through Montana and the northern plains.
I try to do this kind of thing as much as possible because a) it’s awesome, b) it’s eye-opening, and c) it entails quite a bit of research. Along the way, inevitably I learn about art spaces, studios, initiatives, and installations that I never would find out about if I stayed at home. It allows me to get as close to being everywhere at the same time as possible while simultaneously losing the sense of what “where” even is—getting out of my comfort zone, finding a routine in constant change. (Incidentally, I’ve been wanting to pick up a copy of Marc Augé’s seminal Non-Places: Introduction to an Anthropology of Supermodernity (1995) lately, which explores transitory, liminal spaces like roadways, airports, or supermarkets. Have you checked it out?)
Kathleen Norris wrote of the western plains in her 1993 book of essays, Dakota: A Spiritual Geography, the part of the world I’ve been gradually making my way through this week carries “an unfathomable silence that has the power to re-form you.” I think that about all kinds of travel, too. Sometimes the best thing for the soul is simply—consciously—observing something new every single day as the world unfurls in front of you.
See you next week!
—Kate
What you’ll find this week:
Featured artist: Marina Kappos
Four exhibitions on view this week in Barcelona, Berlin, Los Angeles, and New York City
Thirteen opportunities for artists with deadlines coming up soon
Featured Artist: Marina Kappos
Human hands and profiles emerge from kaleidoscopic compositions in Marina Kappos’s acrylic paintings, on view now in Spooky Action at SHRINE in TriBeCa. I stopped in last weekend to see this magical, meditative exhibition, that unfolds in a series of square canvases in three distinct sizes, adding an element of seriality, as if each scene is a frozen film cell or animation.
Spooky Action continues in New York City through June 29. Find more from the artist on Instagram.

Bolding is an artist who, after showing one large painting in the very first international Young Space group exhibition, it’s been such a pleasure to follow as his paintings have evolved over the past 6 to 7 years, drawing on concepts of graffiti and refining ideas around walls as both inspiration and substrate. A lot of his works employ plaster and an element of patina or age.
