While I’m (still) getting used to the time shift and how dark it is in the evenings, the plus side is that this time of year is always exciting in the art realm because both shows and opportunities are whipped into a bit of a frenzy before the holidays. Literally the only drawback is that it’s really hard to narrow down just a few for this email! So without further ado…

Feature: Galen Cheney
Getting glimpses into artists’ workspaces as they experiment and figure out new techniques is such a privilege, even just in daily scrolls through the ol’ Instagram. This “figuring shit out” mode, as Galen Cheney put it, was what drew me to recent works in her studio.
Cheney’s new pieces weave large sheets of canvas together into sculptural paintings. Like a textile or sculpture, they can be viewed from different sides, and while the artist is no stranger to pushing the boundaries of painting through cutting and collage, it’s exciting to get a sense of heft, when a body of work starts to take on a fullness in its fresh, still-forming identity.

From Dovetail: Caleb Taylor
Kansas City-based artist Caleb Taylor describes experiencing architecture and the built environment in terms normally associated with sound, such as “listening” to the characteristics of a room or understanding the “rhythms” of urban grids. He combines painting, sculpture, photography, and installation in galleries, building facades, and architectural interiors, building dialogue around more fully understanding the history of places and constructed sites.
The foundations of Taylor’s ongoing series, conSTRUCTS / reSTRUCTURES, began to take shape in 2017 while he was working at the Joan Mitchell Center in New Orleans. He says, “I became attuned to the disparate ideologies in the ‘Big Easy’ to those found in my hometown, Kansas City, specifically regarding the ethics of place, history of commerce, and dynamics related to urban restoration.”

Richard McDonough: House Full of Time
Recessed doorways, keyholes, and niches are painted and layered with brick-like dried acrylic in Richard McDonough’s sculptural paintings.

LONDON | CEDRIC BARDAWIL
Anthony Banks: An Unfinished Island
I’ve always been drawn to London-based artist Anthony Banks’ palette, foaming with sea greens, rich yellows, and sunset oranges and pinks. Paired with painterly framing devices that hold landscapes and references to British history, they have a beautiful dreamlike ambiguity.

CHICAGO | RHONA HOFFMAN GALLERY
Women on the Verge
Curated by Lisa Wainwright, Women on the Verge includes paintings by 27 women-identifying figurative artists—mostly painters—who use grotesque language in their work as a form of feminist protest and outcry.

BROOKLYN | CARVALHO PARK
Lawrence Calver: Terra Firma
Carvalho Park presents the first New York exhibition of London-based artist Lawrence Calver’s lyrical textile works. The gallery also just expanded into an adjacent space, where you can see a concurrent presentation of works by Kristian Touborg and Florence Giroux Gravel.

Mamali Shafahi: Phantasmagoria: Daddy Kills More People
Shafahi’s first solo exhibition in Athens continues a body of work the artist has been exploring for more than ten years around the concept of procreation, and “how a drop of liquid becomes a human being.” A series of flocked sculptures, based on drawings made by the artist’s father, nod to generational ties and his Iranian heritage.

NEW YORK | ASHES/ASHES
Chanterelle
Lara Joy Evans (pictured above, right), Erik Frydenborg, Justin Ortiz, Vincent Pocsik, Lenard Smith, and Torbjörn Vejvi (above, left) come together in Chanterelle, a really gorgeous group show at ASHES/ASHES—a gallery I somehow only learned about recently. In particular, Vejvi’s sculptural wall pieces like miniature porticos caught my eye.

LONDON | ADDIS FINE ART
Merikokeb Berhanu: A World Grows Within
Berhanu meshes organic or bodily forms with details evocative of circuit boards, flames, and architecture, exploring the implications of humans’ estrangement from nature.

PRAKSIS Residency: Party as Form
Deadline: November 26
This residency opportunity from PRAKSIS in Oslo, Norway, invites a multidisciplinary group of thinkers and makers to explore the craft of social gathering with the theme “Party as Form.” Selected recipients will be part of an active, facilitated program connected with the residency topic and will have access to communal work space at PRAKSIS, in the center of Oslo. Two international artists will also receive 3000 NOK (about $270 USD), and comfortable accommodation, sharing a flat with two other artists. Residency dates are May 27 to June 24, 2024.

KIRA Artist-in-Residence
Deadline: November 30
Every year, KIRA awards 6 artists with a one month residency. The residency will take place from September 13 to October 11, 2024. Artists are provided with individual studio space, comfortable housing, two prepared meals each day, and live on a historic property in the beautiful seaside town of St. Andrews, New Brunswick.

Silver Art Projects Residency at World Trade Center
Deadline: November 30
Silver Art Projects’ studios take up the entire 28th floor of 4 World Trade Center, where selected artists-in-residence will receive a space, free of charge, for one year, plus a one-time stipend of $1,200.

Alchemy 2024 Artist Residencies
Deadline: December 1
Alchemy Art Center offers three types of artist-in-residence programs in their rustic, communal, 9-acre location on San Juan Island, Washington. Programs include the Teaching Artist Residency in Spring and the Artists in Community Residency and Special Projects Residency in Summer. Depending on the opportunity, a monthly living stipend of $300 is included alongside a work exchange program.

Puffin Foundation Grant
Deadline: December 1
Puffin Foundation welcomes proposals in the areas of environmental artistic activism, fine arts, music, and photography for its 2024 grant cycle. Awards average between $1,200 and $1,500, up to $2,500. Please note that the December 1 deadline is for a postmark date to request to apply via mail.

ArtMaze 37: Call for Art

ArtMaze’s 37th—and final—print issue invites applications from artists working in all media, in all stages of their career.

Grand Marais Art Colony Juried Residency
Deadline: December 1
Grand Marais Art Colony invites applications for 3 juried artists-in-residence. Selected residents will receive free studio space and lodging for the nights of May 20 to May 31, 2024, along with a $400 stipend. Foundation House Residency
Deadline: December 3
Foundation House in Greenwich, Connecticut, invites applications for a fully-funded residency from January 26 to February 4, 2024. Each resident will be given a stipend; private bedroom and private or semi-private bathroom; all meals, plus full kitchen access; and access to studio space, a wide variety of common areas, and 75 acres of land to explore and enjoy.

Beam Center Open Call for Proposals
Deadline: December 11
Beam Center seeks design proposals for an ambitious public artwork that will be brought to life through collaborations between youth, Beam Camp staff, and the selected proposer. Projects will be realized by a community of more than 100 young people at Beam Camp (New Hampshire) in Summer 2024. For each selected project, artists receive a $5,000 award. Selected projects have a fabrication budget of approximately $15,000.
