“I thought art was a verb, rather than a noun.” —Yoko Ono
My inbox has been exploding with Miami news the past couple of weeks. I won’t be down there this week—I don’t usually report on the market, so it doesn’t really pay to go to fairs unless I’m collaborating with a gallery or artist at one. But I do hope it’s a great week for everyone there! In the meantime, I thought I’d just share some of my favorite recent reads for something a little more geared toward slowing down, just for a change of pace at a time when things are always buzzing. (Links are not affiliates.)
“Surrealism Against Fascism” by Naomi Klein in EQUATOR
“Mexico’s new Frida Kahlo museum bends the truth” by Anne Vigna in Le Monde
“Drain the Art Swamp, or, What the Media Got Wrong About the Phillips Deaccession” by Marion Maneker in PUCK
Find the Mother Tree: Discovering the Wisdom of the Forest by Suzanne Simard (Vintage)
Blueprint for Counter Education by Maurice Stein and Larry Miller, with amazing design by Marshall Henrichs (Inventory Press)
“Make Culture Weird Again” by W. David Marx in The Atlantic
Sheila Hicks: A Little Bit of a Lot of Things, edited with text by Gianni Jetzer, plus text by Robert Storr (Hatje Cantz)
“When the Map Is the Crime Scene: Visual Sovereignty in an Occupied World” by The Rogue Art Historian/Substack
See you next week.

Runs through December 14

Spectacular ceramics by Jennifer Rochlin (per usual). This is a rich, “new body of hand-built terra cotta vessels created over the past year — a year marked by upheaval and transformation.”

CHICAGO | CORBETT vs. DEMPSEY
Magalie Guérin: Shape Acts
I’ve always been such a fan of Guérin’s palette with its striking oranges, greens, and earthy creams and tans. Her increasing emphasis on sculpture, specifically ceramics, is a joyfully esoteric experience, like walking around three-dimensional glyphs.
